If you are ready for a real Oregon Coast safari, our signature 1.5-Hour Whale Watching Excursion at Whale’s Tail Charters is built for you.
Here is what makes this fast paced, intimate ocean adventure an absolute must do in Depoe Bay.
What to Expect on Your 1.5-Hour Wild Ride
Ninety minutes on the Pacific Ocean is the absolute sweet spot for adventure. It gives Captain Gary the time and freedom to blast past the immediate harbor and explore the rugged coastline where the real magic happens.
Minute 1–15: Heading Past the World’s Smallest Harbor
Experience transiting the world’s smallest navigable harbor. Feel the acceleration as we clear the Depoe Bay bridge and hit the open water. Hold onto your hats, the ride out is half the fun!
Minute 15–75: Tracking the Resident Gray Whales
Resident Gray Whales Resident gray whales remain around Depoe Bay for a period of days to months. These whales are also known as the Pacific Coast Feeding Group.
The Zodiac Advantage: Low to the Water, Close to the Action
Most people see whales from high up on a massive, slow-moving commercial boat. We do things differently.
Our specialized, 6-passenger rigid hull inflatable boats (Zodiacs) put you just inches above the waterline.
- Eye-Level Encounters: When a 40-foot gray whale breaks the surface near a Zodiac, you aren’t looking down on it, you are looking at it.
- 360-Degree Views: Every single seat on our boat is a front-row window seat.
- Quiet & Eco-Friendly: Our nimble boats can sit quietly on the water without loud, vibrating engines, allowing resident whales to behave naturally right alongside us.
- From June through October, Depoe Bay is home to a unique resident population of gray whales. Because our boat is fast, we can quickly cover ground to find active whales. You might see powerful tail flukes, massive spy-hops, or even a full breach. Minute 75–90: Seals, Sea Lions, and Sea Caves On our way back, we cruise tight against the jagged volcanic cliffs. We will check out the local harbor seals basking on the rocks and look for soaring bald eagles nesting in the coastal pines.
Fast Checklist: Gear Up for the Ocean
- Layers are King: Wear a fleece or hoodie under a windproof jacket.
- Keep it Flat: Wear closed-toe shoes with good rubber traction (no flip-flops or heels).
- Protect Your Eyes: Polarized sunglasses cut the ocean glare so you can spot whales underwater.
- Secure Your Camera: Smartphones and cameras are welcome but make sure they have a wrist or neck strap!
Ready to Claim Your Seat?
